Ciao! Greetings from Switzerland, I am Giovanni Zanecchia, a 22-year-old American working and studying at Franklin College Switzerland. I’m working the Tech Support office as a work study and have become pretty versed with PC machines. I am originally a Mac User, though, I seriously don’t understand the hostility between the machines. OK, Macs have the ability to read PC docs, and with Virtual PC you can basically run a PC on your Mac, the only prob it is slow. But Windows is Good! Especially XP. I’m using XP Home on a Dell Inspiron 5000, and am very happy with it. When my Dad let me use this laptop of his, it originally had Windows 98 SE and was, WOW, SLOW AS PUMPERDUNK! We upgraded to Win 2000 Pro, installed over 98, an OS Sam which, which did nothing more than fill up the hard drive with more garbage, did add some stability, but it was Just MOLASSES. Anyway, I ended up formatting the computer and reinstalling 2000 Pro a few months later which provided a decent ride for a while, it booted up decently fast—not 20 minutes like before—and was reasonably responsive. To get all that Dell garbage Adware off of there was a good move.
Anyway, I’m using 2000 cool for a while, then I leave my computer to my bro for a while, and he installs Itunes and Quicktime, and the Ipod software (which is totally ludicris because I already have a media player, don’t care for QuickTime on a PC, and his Ipod is Firewire, not USB 2.0. IN YOUR FACE. So my computer is slow as hell, not much disk space, I’m wondering what the heck is going on in the background since I had installed Kazaa and some other GAIN software, and the only resolution I knew, since I didn’t know anything about MSCONFIG at the time, was to reformat. So I install XP, against my bosses advice since I only had 192 of RAM, and 500 MHZ, but it runs fine, and I haven’t had any problems since. I would highly recommend XP to anyone running a reasonably decent computer, or at least 2000. Where 2000 takes 10-15 minutes to load, XP is up in a few minutes. I have my copy so tweaked in MSCONFIG that it boots in about a minute and a half. I installed XP on my PC at home, which was a Garbage Gag that I built from old parts and stuff that the school was throwing away, and even with 98 Mgs of RAM (I recently upgraded to 114), and whatever speed that AMC processor is, it runs OK. Seriously, it’s not bad, and with some tweaking it can be a really suitable solution. GOOD JOB MICROSOFT!
Anyway, enough filandering, you can check out my little stories that have really just come up over the past few days in terms of installing and backing up software. Take it easy and add to the wealth of info on the web—It’s like a Giant Brain, we add more, and we can all learn more from each other—The Communication Revolution is here!!!
